The first busiest week ended today.

When I had small party with my Japanese friends, drinking some beers in my room, some of my roommate窶冱 friends came in, and had a conversation.

I was asked my father's job. I answered he is a lawyer. They astonished, furthermore, they asked me whether my father earn a lot of money. I said no, and told them some of lawyers in Japan make lots of money, but others and my father doesn't. Brian pointed out in the U.S. lawyers earn really richly.

Actually, my father is lawyer, but he is solicitor.
There are two types of lawyer in English, especially in Britain; barrister and solicitor. Barrister is 窶彗 lawyer in Britain who can argue cases in the higher courts窶�, on the other hand, solicitor is defined as 窶彗 type of lawyer who gives advice, does the necessary work when property is bought or sold, and defends people, especially in the lower courts of law窶�.

In that conversation, lawyer meant barrister who speaks in court.
In the states, lawyer is classified as attorney and counselor. Attorney is 窶彗 lawyer窶� in American English, on the contrary, counselor is 窶徭omeone whose job is to help and support people with problems窶�. In this definition, counselor is not specified as a lawyer, but I don窶冲 know whether both names are popular, how to be used. They didn窶冲 mention that differences, they may not know the classification.

Anyway, my father is a solicitor.
In Japan, there are various types of solicitors, but each has own specialty such as labor, insurance, inheritance, registration, or maritime affairs. My father is good at immigration and naturalization, maritime affairs, and inheritance. However, precisely speaking, my father is a kind of solicitor, but he cannot speak in any court. This is Japanese extremely complicated classification, most of the solicitors in Japan cannot go to any court. They mainly work in their own office or go to government and municipal office. Some 窶徭olicitors窶� also work as a 窶彡ounselor窶�. Uncommonly my father has a task in English, but he doesn窶冲 have any proper name in English, so he couldn窶冲 help calling himself solicitor.

I realized again these differences, it is interesting. Regrettably, I couldn窶冲 explain above those in conversation. I have to work more.
