¡¡Pride Week; Freedom to Marry Day.

Tuesday was the freedom to marry day. We collected the signature of students for the petitions. Those petitions will be sent to Iowan Senators, Congressperson and the President of the United States. In this country, freedom to marry just means same-sex marriage, and this is first-class political issue right now. It is, unfortunately, a highly debatable topic. (And maybe it is unfortunately too, this kind of discussion hasnãàÑÕ really started in Japan.)

Therefore, some of the students seemed to be really unwillingly to sign their names. I had no idea if I should have tried to persuade them or discuss it. We collected over 70 studentsãà™ signatures for each form at last. I donãàÑÕ know if it is a big number. But I believe that the action per se is important even though there is a possibility that the Constitution will be amended.

One of my gay friends told me that this is the first amendment that limits our rights or freedom in the long history of constitution. I strongly oppose a series of movement that supports the amendment. As long as the amendment goes through the due process under the law, it can be said that it is legitimate even though the amendment limits the human rights. Democracy could work in that way as the history of civil rights movement or Hitler show. However, it is hard to understand why the marriages should be defined. However, I think what the gay people want is just a silence. Nobody wants to intervene in own personal life. That should be most important.
